World War II or Second World War that lasted from 1939 to 1945 was a global war and the most disastrous event of the century as the war ended with the nuclear bombing over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two densely populated cities of Japan. Even after such a long period when it is the 75th anniversary today, the war is still remembered by all of us as it has caused a lot of destruction and still people are facing its consequences in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So, let’s know more about this war and discover some unknown facts in this article so that we can enhance our knowledge and get aware of the effects of nuclear bombings. Let’s get started.
WHAT WERE THE CAUSES OF WORLD WAR II?
World cannot forget the nuclear bombing of the United States over Japan’s two cities named Hiroshima & Nagasaki. As this disastrous event was the part or result of the World War II so let’s know about its causes. The First World War was so horrible that it was called ‘the war to end all the wars’. But the agreement to end World War I did not resolve the problems of the world. The causes of the Second World War were numerous. Some most important of them are as follows :
TREATY OF VERSAILLES: The treaty of Versailles was the most important of the peace treaties that brought First World War to an end. But this treaty was imposed on Germany as the purpose of this treaty was to end the war in such a way that the victorious Entente powers ( France, Britain, the Dominions, and the US ) would be satisfied. After the First World War, the allied powers decided the future of Germany in which Germany had to accept the guilt of the war and pay reparations. Germany lost territory and was prohibited from having a large military.
ECONOMIC DEPRESSION: The whole world was hit by an economic depression in the late 1920s. The trade and everything came to an end and unemployment increased. In this situation, people wanted a powerful leader and they chose Adolf Hitler in Germany in 1933 as he promised them to restore German wealth and power.
GERMANY’S MILITARISM: Hitler immediately secretly started building up Germany’s army and weapons. Also, in 1936 he made an alliance with Italy and Japan. This military alliance of Germany, Italy and Japan was called the Axis Powers.
FAILURE OF APPEASEMENT: Appeasement means agreeing to the demands of another country to avoid conflict. In an agreement, Britain and France allowed to annex areas in Czechoslovakia where German-speakers lived. Germany agreed not to invade any other areas or any other countries. But in March 1939, Germany broke its promise and invaded the rest of the area too. Then in September 1939, they invaded Poland also. Then Britain and France declared war on Germany hence World War II had begun in Europe.
FAILURE OF LEAGUE OF NATIONS: The league of nations was an international group that was created after World War I to solve the disputes between countries before they erupted in warfare. Unfortunately, the league stopped all its operations during World War II as Japan didn’t agree to their policies and continued to invade China.
JAPAN’S MILITARISM: In 1939, Japan was hit badly by economic depression. Then people of Japan turned to the army in order to find the solution to their economic problems. Japanese invaded China. Japan continued to occupy China and Korea. As Japan invaded other areas of South East Asia, the United States grew concerned about its territories in Asia. Japan felt that its expansion could be threatened by the United States military and attacked Pearl Harbour, Hawaii in December 1941. World War II began in Asia.
CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAR
The war in Europe was concluded with an invasion of Germany by the Western Allies and the Soviet Union, the suicide of Adolf Hitler and the German unconditional surrender on 8th May 1945. But Japan refused to surrender on its terms, so the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August respectively. Also, on 9th August Japan announced its intention to surrender on 15th August 1945.
WHAT HAPPENED IN HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI?
On the morning of August 6, a B-29 bomber dropped the atomic bomb called “Little Boy” on the city of Hiroshima and three days later again dropped the bomb called “Fat Man” on Nagasaki. This was the most disastrous event of the whole world war-II or even the history till now. Almost 80,000 people including the children lost their lives and many people got injured during this bombing. Also, those who survived are still facing various health issues due to the radiation.
WHY HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI?
The question that hits our mind the most, especially when we are talking about the bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is that why Hiroshima and Nagasaki, why not any other city? So, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen for the bombing because the cities have dense population and can serve the military needs. To destroy the military production and to destroy Japan’s ability to fight wars, the United States chose Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
EFFECTS OF THE WAR
Almost 60 million people lost their lives during this war. The major destruction was caused due to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki many people died due to the radiation and still people face many health issues. Even today the newborn babies face the high risk of cancer and other issues too.
STEPS TAKEN TO AVOID SUCH EVENTS IN FUTURE
Keeping in mind this disastrous event, a treaty was also signed known as Treaty on The Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty was passed on 7th July 2017. In order to come into effect, the signature of at least 50 countries is required. Till July 2020 40 countries have signed this treaty. The nations those are part of it, this treaty prohibits the development, testing, production, transfer, use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.
Now, I would like to conclude this article by requesting all of you to just take out two minutes from your busy schedule and pray for the departed souls who lost their lives in such a horrible incident. Also, express your love and gratitude towards the survivors of the blast by sending them wishes.
