We in the majority have friends or at least one friend – someone we spend time with, someone who knows us better than others do, someone we can count on when the need arises. Life without a friend seems like a cup of tea without sugar. To remark the presence of such a wonderful bond a day is celebrated every year i.e. Friendship Day.

The day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year. But have you ever astonished that why this day is celebrated or how it came into existence or what is the history behind this day? HISTORY OF THE DAY

Friendship day was started in America in the year 1935. It is said that once on the first Sunday of August, a person was killed by the US government. In the memory of that person, one of his friends committed suicide. After this incident, it is believed that the government of the US decided to celebrate the first Sunday of August as Friendship Day from that particular day onwards.

There are many other stories too. Another saying is that there was a merchant who started this day in the year 1930. It is said that a businessman named Joe Hall, set the day for all the people on which two friends could celebrate their friendship by exchanging cards. To celebrate this day, he chose the day of August.

One another story that is heard related to the friendship day is of Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho. It is said that on 20th July 1958, Dr Raman Artemio proposed the idea of celebrating friendship day with his friends at a dinner party. After this tradition, special attention was paid regarding the celebration of this Friendship Day in all-over the world. So, from all the above stories we can conclude that there so many tales and beliefs regarding the origination of this day.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DAY

The day is celebrated to remark such a pure and wonderful bond between the two persons. The day is celebrated with the aim of strengthening the relationship of friends and to honour them. This day also aims to increase the love between friends. Friendship day also signifies that no matter how old we are or how rich, the poor or high class we are, we all have at least one friend that consoles us, guides us, supports us and stand by us in every situation. The day is celebrated to cherish the friendship and value that person who is with us at any cost in our good and bad times.

HOW THE DAY IS CELEBRATED?

Friendship Day is eagerly awaited by all the friends in the world. On this day, everyone tells their friend about their heart and make their friends feel special. On this day, friends exchange gifts and plan outings with each other. In India, people celebrate this day by giving colourful friendship bands, flowers and chocolates to each other.

WHAT EXACTLY THIS DAY IS ABOUT?

As we have been talking about this day and have discussed almost everything related to this day. But this day is actually about expressing gratitude to the person who actually stands by us in every situation and at any cost. Friendship day is not just about celebrating, but to value and honour the feelings of a true friend and make them feel special. This day is also about to make them realize how special they are and how important their presence is in our lives.

As we all are crazy about the movies and series nowadays. So there, we can witness some amazing examples of true friendship. A friendship between Jai and Veeru of Sholay, Friendship between the six friends of the series FRIENDS or it be a friendship of Jethalal or Mehta Saheb of Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chasmah, in almost every episode we can witness a spectacular bond of friends. This is what actual friendship means. They do not only act, they give us a message of true friendship.
