WHY THIS DAY IS CELEBRATED ON JUNE 5?
You all must be wondering why we should celebrate this day? So here is your answer, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United States (UN) stimulates and creates awareness among people about the environment and environmental issues. Moreover, this day draws the attention of citizens towards the importance of the environment. This day also promotes the ways to conserve the environment and improve the earth’s environmental conditions.
HOW AND WHEN THIS DAY CAME INTO EXISTENCE?
I think you all want to know how the tradition of this day was started? So, behind the tradition of this day, there is a history. Once in the year 1772, a conference was organized in Stockholm on the topic Human Environment and all the discussions and debates led to the conclusion of celebrating this day. Two years later i.e. from 1774 this day came into a proper existence and is celebrated annually. In 1987 the concept of rotating the center to different cities with different themes to host the day every year was introduced to celebrate this day in an interesting way.
WHAT IS THE THEME OF THIS ENVIRONMENT DAY AND WHO IS HOSTING THIS YEAR?
After knowing that there is a unique theme and different host every year for celebrating this day. This year Columbia with its partnership of Germany is going to host this special World Environment Day with the theme decided by the UN (United Nations) i.e. ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’. The theme is really very interesting and important as well, for the sake of endangered species and nature. Biodiversity plays a very important role in maintaining the ecosystem so celebrating biodiversity is a great idea.
INDIA HOSTED OR GOING TO HOST THE DAY?
Most of you all must be thinking that what about our country India? Did our country host or will it go to host this day in the future? So, the answer is yes absolutely India has hosted this day in the year 2011 and 2018 respectively. In 2011 India hosted this day for the very first time with the theme ‘Forests: Nature at your service’ and in the year 2018 again India hosted the day with the theme ‘ Beat Plastic Pollution’.
HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE THIS DAY THIS YEAR?
As we all know that nowadays the whole world is suffering from the deadly virus and we are not allowed to gather or move outside to celebrate this day. But we can’t avoid this day as it only comes once in a year. This day is really very important as the environment serves our needs selflessly and it is only a single day to express our gratitude towards the environment. So, this year we can celebrate this day from our homes by making posters, sharing various measures to protect the environment, or participating in various webinars or quizzes which will be organized by various NGOs on the occasion of this World Environment Day.
